| Pseudotsuga menziesii DouglasfirThe 2-4" oval to cylindrical cones are pendulous, bearing conspicuous three-pointed bracts that extend beyond the scales. They are purplish prior to maturity, but turn yellowish-brown to brown over time. The Rocky Mountain type has 2-3" cones with strongly reflexed bracts, whereas the Pacific Coast has larger 4" cones with appressed bracts. In either case, the prominent 3-parted bracts sticking out between the cone scales make for positive identification of this species. |
