Pyracantha coccinea
Scarlet firethorn

Alternate, simple and occurring in mixed sizes, the semi-evergreen leaves of this species are narrow-elliptic to lanceolate or oblanceolate, crenate-serrate and 1/8 - 1 3/5" long. Several leaves are borne at each node, with the mixture of sizes serving as a useful identification feature. Some small leaves are even borne on the thorns. The leaves are glossy and dark green in summer, turning purple to brown in Midwestern winters. In warmer climates the leaves are evergreen, remaining dark glossy green all winter.
