This is the parent of the pear that most of us have purchased at one time or another in the supermarket. Actually a pome, the fruit is pear-shaped, 3-4" long, and a light greenish-yellow. Oftentimes these trees can be identified by the pulpy mass of decaying fruit below them -- somehow there are always too many to eat. Do not plant this species unless you are prepared for lots of fruit.
