Alternate, simple and broad elliptic, the 3 to 6" long leaves have 7 to 9 bristle tipped lobes and deep sinuses between the lobes. They are glossy and dark green above and lighter below with tufts of hairs in the axils of the veins. Many of the sinuses are "C" shaped, especially on the terminal set of lobes. The prevalence of the "C"-shaped lobes is in contrast to the more open "U"-shaped lobes of Quercus palustris.
