Imbricate, broadly ovate and blunt to sharply pointed at the apex, the 3/16 to 1/4" long buds are reddish brown and have pale gray pubescence above the middle. Like other oaks, they are clustered at the ends of the stems. In contrast, buds of Quercus palustris are narrow ovate and lacking any substantial pubescence.
