Red oak

The smooth gray bark of young trees becomes vertically striated in alternating strips of smooth light gray between rough dark gray areas. The striped effect is most pronounced on trunks 12-18" in diameter and forms a good identification feature. In old age, the bark is dark gray and deeply ridged and furrowed.
