The alternate and simple leaves are oval to obovate in shape and 1 to 3" long with an entire margin. The leaf arrangement and margin easily differentiate this species from Rhamnus catharticus. The leaf bases are rounded to broad-cuneate while the apex is abruptly acuminate. Like other members of this family, the leaf venation curves towards the apex in a dogwood-like fashion.
