Rhododendron schlippenbachii

Rhododendron schlippenbachii
Royal azalea

Lacking any trace of magenta, the beautiful flowers of this species range in color from rosy pink to light pink and a nearly pure white with a pink blush. They are fragrant and open with the leaves in early to mid May in central Illinois. The 5-lobed corolla is widely funnelform and 3" across with 2-limbed petals and 10 stamens. A faint to moderate reddish brown dotting can be found in the throat. The flowers can be found in clusters of 3-6 at stem ends.
