| Rhododendron yakushimanum Yakushimanum rhododendronDensely pubescent above and below when young, the 2-3" evergreen leaves are oblong to slightly obovate and with their pubescence produce a gray green appearance in spring. As they mature, they become glabrous above and glossy dark green. The heavy pubescence, or indumentum, is retained on the lower surface throughout the season, becoming brown later in the season. The margins of the leaves are distinctly rolled under. Because of their size and the relatively large flower clusters, this is considered a coarse textured small plant. The contrast between young and old leaves provides year-around interest. |
