| Rhododendron yakushimanum Yakushimanum rhododendronThe spectacular flowers of this species and its many hybrids are among the best of this genus. Words often fail when trying to describe the grandeur of these beauties. The flowers often present a bi-colored appearance due to the more intensely colored newer flowers that open in the middle of each large truss. The flowers are frequently a blending of red, pink and white, with most fading to near white as they mature. The outer margins of the petals are often more intensely colored than the throats of the flowers, again contributing to the bi-color effect. The 2 3/4" flowers are borne in trusses up to 12 in number. The petals of many are strongly undulate, but can be fringed or entire. Most frequently, the flowers are bright rose-pink in bud, becoming white to light pink as they mature in late May. |
