Ribes odoratum
Clove currant

Beautifully clove-scented, the yellow and red flowers occur with the new leaves in mid to late April in the Midwest. The 1" flowers have 5 yellow petals that have their bases fused into a long narrow tube. The free portions of the petals are obovate and form a flower about 1/2" in diameter. An inner row of petals clustered around the reproductive parts is tipped with bright red. Although beautiful up-close, they are only very slightly showy from a distance. The most effective feature of the dioecious flowers is the strong fragrance.
