Ribes odoratum
Clove currant

Culture: Clove currant is heat and drought resistant, somewhat pH adaptable, and easy to transplant. It can be grown in either shade or sun. It is often short-lived in the landscape.

This species is an alternate host for White Pine Blister Rust and as such, should be kept out of the upper Midwest, where white pine is an important timber and landscape species. Anthracnose, cane blight and leaf spots can be unsightly and reduce the vigor of this species.

Usage: This is not a common species because of its disease problems and lack of a formal habit. Natively, it is a good source of summer fruit for a variety of birds and both small and large mammals. Where used it can be used as a loose hedge or in a mass, although many better plants can be found. Despite these negative features, one can easily be attracted to this species for its delightfully clove-scented flowers.
