Rosa rugosa
Rugosa rose

Culture: A very tough plant, this species is known for its salt tolerance, easily growing along the ocean coastlines. This adaptable plant needs full sun and prefers moist acidic to neutral soils but tolerates dry sandy sites. An organic mulch is recommended to help control weeds and weedy woody plants that are difficult to remove once established within the prickly canopy.

Known for its toughness, this species is not seriously troubled with the common rose maladies. If borers become a problem they can be controlled by pruning.

Usage: The Rugosa rose can be used as specimens, in masses, as part of shrub border and also as a barrier plant. Numerous cultivars exist with varying flower and fruit colors and single and double flowers. One of our favorites is 'Fru Dagmar Hastrup'.
