Salix caprea
Goat willow

Making for easy winter identification, the appressed and ovate flower buds range from 1/3 - 1/2" in length, and are covered with a purplish-brown to bright red scale. When this scale is removed, a mass of silky white hairs is revealed. Vegetative buds are similar in appearance, except only 1/4" long and narrower.
