Sciadopitys verticillata
Umbrella pine

The leaves are of two different kinds. The most obvious are the large 3-5" long, dark glossy green, linear and flat needles that are borne in whorls of 20-30 at the ends of the stem. The whorled-like appearance of the needles resemble the ribs of an umbrella, hence the common name, umbrella pine. These large needles are emarginate at the apex and have a furrow on both surfaces with two white stomatal bands below. The small needles are 3/16" long, scale-like in appearance, appressed to the stem and spirally arranged on the young twigs.
