Sciadopitys verticillata
Umbrella pine

Culture: Culture: In the Midwest, the Umbrella pine is best grown in protected sites with moist, acid and well-drained soil. This species is easily winter injured in the Midwest, and therefore must be protected from both open exposed and windy sites as well as hot and dry sites. Locating the plant amongst other evergreen materials or providing partial shade will increase its ability to survive. Careful consideration should be given to proper siting for this species to thrive. It is transplanted balled and burlapped in the spring.

Other than cultural sensitivity, this species generally has few insect and disease problems.

Usage: This unusual species is usually used as a specimen plant, although it must be located with protection from excessive wind exposure. The slow growth rate makes it well suited to a small conifer or rock garden. Although potentially a large tree in nature, it rarely exceeds 35' in height under cultivation.
