Sequoiadendron giganteum
Giant sequoia

Maturing in their second year, the 1 1/2-3" cones are oval in shape, terminally borne, and are green the first year, turning red-brown as they mature. The cones are composed of 25-40 scales, each thickened near the outside edge. The tiny 2-winged seeds are 1/10 - 1/5" long, light yellow in color and can remain viable in the cone for up to twenty years. It takes nearly 100,000 seeds to make a single pound!
