Sequoia sempervirens
California redwood

The linear and flattened evergreen leaves are 1/4 - 3/4" long and spread in two ranks and are alternate in arrangement. They are dark and glossy green on top with two faint white stomatal bands below and have a slender point. The leaves on the terminal shoots are spiraled around the branch rather than 2-ranked and are only about 1/4" long. The leaves of this species resemble those of a yew, Taxus species, as compared to the more juniper-like foliage of the Giant sequoia.
