Vaccinium corymbosum
Highbush blueberry

Culture: Like other Ericaceous plants this species is choosy about its environment. Acidic soils with a pH between 4.5 and 6.5 (4.5-5.5 ideal) with good drainage are a must. Addition of powdered sulfur and acidic peat moss according to soil test will do much to ensure a good experience with this plant if you do not have these soil conditions to start with. If the soil is not acidic and well drained, plants will fail. The use of an organic mulch is important for best plant performance and fruiting. Supplemental water will likely be needed in times of drought. Once the birds have found your plantings, netting will likely be required if you plan to harvest any fruit. Locate plants in full sun to partial shade.

Relatively few problems will bother most landscape plants if the proper cultural environment is provided. Large sized fruit production plantings will likely require more extensive efforts.

Usage: Highbush blueberries can make an excellent addition to the fruit garden or for use in a shrub border.
