Acer saccharum subsp. nigrum
Black maple

The leathery, dark green leaves of this variety have drooping outer leaf lobes, a pubescent underside and stipules often found at the base of the petiole. These stipules, which are a key identification feature, can be as small as 1/8" or appearing as a lanceolate leaf-like structure with its own petiolule originating near the base of the petiole.
