Acer saccharum subsp. nigrum
Black maple

Culture: Black maples thrive in lowland sites but are considered more tolerant of heat and moisture deficit than sugar maples. Evidence to support these greater tolerances is not conclusive. Work published by Dawson and Hauer at the University of Illinois found the reverse to be true in small seedlings.

Usage: This large shade tree is suitable for parks, golf courses, and roomy properties, but is not a good choice for small urban lots.
