The alternate, simple, foliage is elliptic to oblanceolate, 1 1/2 to 3 1/2" long, with uniform crenate-serrate teeth that are black tipped. The upper surface is glossy and the underside is grayish tomentose for most of the season. The leaf blade is usually folded along the midrib. A row of black hair-like glands lines the top side of the midrib.
