Aronia arbutifolia
Red chokeberry

Culture: This easily transplanted shrub is adaptable to a wide range of soils and conditions. Fruit production is best in full sun but the plant will tolerate partial shade. Red chokeberry is also tolerant of both wet and dry soils.

Leaf spot or apple borer may attack but these and other potential problems are not usually serious.

Usage: The best use for Chokeberry is to plant it in masses. Although the stems are leggy and the habit is somewhat open, it will sucker and form uniform colonies. The bright red fruit on these massed plants maintains its striking appearance for several months. The cultivar 'Brilliantissima' is outstanding for its shiny foliage, good red fall color and larger, waxy red fruit.
