Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea'
Purple-leaved Japanese barberry

Distinctly purple in color, the leaves are similar to those of the species in all other respects. Full sunlight is required for the full development of the purple color. If grown in shade they will have a slight to moderate green cast, depending upon the amount of shade. The intensity of the purple color also varies with individual specimens. Some growers still propagate this variety by seed and only use the most deeply colored seedlings.
