Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea'
Purple-leaved Japanese barberry

Culture: This variety needs full sun to have its best purple or red-purple color. If grown in shade the leaves will have a green cast. As in the species, the thorniness of the stems makes these plants unpleasant to handle.

Usage: This purple-foliaged form is much used in the landscape in small masses or in shrub beds, especially where a tough plant is required.
