Chaenomeles speciosa
Common flowering quince

Culture: This species is easy to transplant and grow. Flowering is best when sighted in full sun. Heavy pruning every few years will enhance the flower production.

Leaf spot and aphids may be a problem. Late frosts are also likely to eliminate or reduce the flowering in some years.

Usage: The common flowering quince may be used as a barrier plant because it develops into an impenetrable thorny barrier. This and the other quinces are single season plants, they have attractive flowers in the spring and the remaining seasons they are not much to look at. This species is often seen sheared because plants get much larger than their owners had anticipated.
