Chionanthus retusus
Chinese fringetree

The slightly imbricate buds are 4-sided, dark brown, triangular-ovate pointed and pubescent. The two outer scales cover most of the buds. The buds appear to sit atop a slight bulbous widening of the stem just above the widened leaf bases that flare out from the stem at each node.
