Cornus alternifolia
Pagoda dogwood

Culture: A fibrous rooted plant, transplants best when young. In warm or hot climates it performs best in part shade and requires moist, acid well drained soils. Its performance is best in cool sites.

Leaf spot may be problematic and stem cankers can cause the loss of entire plants. I have observed more cankers when plants are inappropriately located in hot dry sites or following drought conditions.

Usage: Popular with architects because of the horizontal branching habit. Pagoda dogwood works well as small tree in the landscape. It has an attractive winter habit, showy spring flowers and a nice neat appearance.
