Cornus florida
Flowering dogwood

A distinctive winter identification feature, the 1/4 - 1/3" diameter valvate flower buds are broader than long and flattened at the apex. The buds are borne at the ends of the stems and are gray to purplish gray in color. The vegetative buds are small, valvate, slender and almost hidden by the leaf scar.
