Cornus florida

Cornus florida
Flowering dogwood

Culture: Successful culture of flowering dogwood includes, well drained moist soils, acidic conditions, and full sun to partial shade. Transplanting can be difficult. Cold winter temperatures can injure flower buds or cause considerable branch dieback.

Problems are greatest on trees planted in stressful conditions. Borers and Discula anthracnose are the two most severe problems. The anthracnose is most severe in the Northeast, especially in shady native stands, where it has killed large numbers of plants.

Usage: Where hardy, this is an outstanding specimen plant for landscapes. It also makes an excellent understory plant. The attractive foliage, attractive habit, outstanding flowers, interesting bark and excellent fall color, elevate this plant to aristocratic status. Unfortunately in some areas, it is overused.
