Corylus maxima 'Purpurea'
Purple-leaved European filbert

The stems are thin and brown with raised tan lenticels. The unopened catkins of this species are reddish-brown with a slight purplish cast and slightly shorter and fatter than those of Corylus avellana. They are 1 - 1 1/2" long and 3/16 - 1/4 " in diameter.
