Reddish brown to gray and either pubescent or glabrous, the slightly angled stems of this species are dotted with orange lenticels. Stems of male trees bear 1/4"-long, branched, narrow flower pedicels. Female trees bear unbranched thick fruit pedicels that are enlarged at their ends to accommodate the calyx lobes that may or may not persist. If present, the persistent calyx is a good identification feature.
