Diospyros virginiana
Common persimmon

Culture: Somewhat difficult to transplant, it is best to move persimmon in the spring into soils that are moist and well drained. Persimmon is pH adaptable and does best in full sun.

Although generally trouble free, leaf spot may be a problem on persimmon.

Usage: A native tree useful in parks and other large areas. It is not common in the upper Midwest but grows almost everywhere in the South. The Morton Arboretum has several mature trees that fruit very well. Persimmon is a good wildlife tree and the fruit makes an attractive jelly or tasty ice cream.
