Larix laricina
Tamarack

Culture: This species thrives in wet, acidic soils and cold climates. It is much less happy in warmer or dry areas and is best used in northern climates.

Two serious insect pests are the larch casebearer and the larch sawfly; cankers, needle rusts and wood decay can also be serious disease problems. Despite these problems, most gardeners will only likely encounter occasional problems with the casebearer. The tree is more likely to have problems with general culture if grown in either a hot or a dry location.

Usage: The Tamarack is best used in mass in parks and other large areas as a screen or group of specimens. In the lower portions of the Midwest, the other species of larch will perform better than this species.
