Leucothoe fontanisiana
Drooping leucothoe

Culture: Like other Ericaceous plants, this species is quite particular in its cultural requirements. They require moist, acid soils in partial to full shade. Without good drainage and acidic moist soils, the species will fail. It does not tolerate drought or exposure to strong dry winds.

This species has few problems once proper cultural conditions are provided.

Usage: The Drooping leucothoe makes an excellent specimen plant near the front of a shrub border, especially in shady conditions. Its low height makes is useful in front of larger or more leggy plants. Unfortunately the species form is not readily available in many parts of the Midwest. Most nurseries carry 'Girard's Rainbow', a variegated form, to the exclusion of the more classic species.
