Moderately showy and most commonly pink to sometimes red and occasionally white, the flowers of this species occur in pairs at the nodes in mid May just after the leaves develop. The flower petals are formed into a corolla with a deeply divided upper limb opposed by a single lower limb. The deeply divided limb results in 5 nearly equal lobes. The individual flowers are about 3/4" in diameter.
