Alternate, simple and oblong-obovate, the huge 12 to 32" long leaves are entire with an auriculate to subcordate base and short acuminate apex. The leaves are glabrous above and silky pubescent below. The large size makes these leaves susceptible to wind tatter or tear. The auriculate or subcordate base easily differentiates this species from Magnolia tripetala.
