Magnolia virginiana
Sweetbay magnolia

Alternate, simple and elliptic or narrow elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, the 3 to 5" leaves are entire with an acute or obtuse apex and a broad cuneate to sometimes rounded base. The evergreen to semi-evergreen leaves are thick and stiff, with a medium to dark green highly glossy upper surface and a white glaucous underside. In central Illinois, most leaves drop during the winter with a few remaining on the plant green or tan in color, depending upon winter temperatures and exposure. In the South, leaves remain glossy green all winter if the temperatures don't become too cold.
