Menispermum canadense

Menispermum canadense
Common moonseed

Purplish red turning black, suborbicular and grape-like, the 1/3" diameter, drupes have a waxy glaucous film, maturing in fall. The lunar-shaped seeds contained in the drupes are the basis for the common name, moonseed. The fruits that are only produced on female plants, are reported by Flint to be toxic. Since the clusters of fruits can appear grape-like, caution should be used in placement of this species near children.
