Menispermum canadense
Common moonseed

Culture: Although this plant may die to the ground in winter it quickly grows back in the spring. Since it can spreads via underground stems it can be difficult to control but could be used in poor sites.

This species usually experiences few problems other than winter dieback of the stems, thus requiring some pruning.

Usage: The densely produced large leaves makes this a bold screening vine. Although the flowers and fall color are not showy, this can be a useful vine, particularly in tough sites. I prefer to see the species used as a vine on a fence or trellis rather than as a ground cover where it will readily scramble over other plants. Without maintenance, this plant can become a nuisance.
