The 4-6" cylindric pendulous cones are the largest of the common spruce species cultivated in the Midwest. Typically borne high in the tree, the cones have non-undulating scales that are often irregularly toothed along the margins. When forming, they are light brown, purple or green, becoming reddish-brown at maturity and persisting.
