Pieris floribunda
Mountain pieris

Culture: The mountain andromeda performs best in moist, well-drained and acidic soils but tolerates neutral pH soils better than most Ericaceous plants. A location with partial shade is ideal but full sun is tolerated in areas with moist soils and moderate climates. This species also performs well in moderate shade.

This species is not affected or only very mildly affected by lacebugs that are problematic on Pieris japonica. This resistance plus greater cold hardiness provides a good reason to utilize this native species over the introduced Japanese Pieris. If good soil drainage is lacking, Phytophthora root rot may occur. Plants must be sheltered from strong winter winds to avoid dieback.

Usage: The attractive foliage and showy flowers makes this an excellent plant for specimen use, borders and massing. It should be used more than it currently is.
