Pinus resinosa
Red pine

Culture: The Red pine performs well on exposed, dry, acid, sandy soils in full sun. The species is extremely cold tolerant, but the branches are susceptible to ice and snow damage. Although it is tolerant of adverse conditions, it is easily damaged by salt spray, soil compaction or flooding. It should be transplanted balled and burlapped.

Relatively free of serious pests in its natural range, but subject to many troubles elsewhere.

Usage: This species is best suited to use in difficult sites that are extremely dry, exposed and infertile. It has performed well in the central sands area of Wisconsin. It can be used in grove plantings and windbreaks, although in middle age it will limb itself up. The off-color of the foliage in winter makes it less desirable than many other pine species.
