Alternate, simple and obovate to elliptic, the 2 1/2 - 4 1/2" leaves are finely serrate with impressed and netted venation. The leaf bases are broad wedge-shaped to rounded and the apices are abruptly acuminate. One of the first trees to leaf out in the spring, the new leaves are a welcome reprieve from a long winter. The petioles bear several small glands near the leaf blade.
