Prunus padus

Prunus padus
European bird cherry

Culture: The European birdcherry tolerates moderate shade to full sun and performs best in well-drained moist and acidic to neutral soils.

This species is quite susceptible to black knot fungus that produces black galls on the stems. Prune and destroy affected branches. Otherwise, this is a relatively trouble-free species.

Usage: This species makes an effective small shade tree or small mass. Its dark green color can be an effective backdrop for other more colorful materials. The cultivar 'Watereri' has 6-8" long racemes making the flower display even more showy. 'DTR 117', trademarked Summer Glow, has reddish purple leaf color all season, along with red fruits.
