| Quercus phellos Willow oakNarrow and strap-like with a taper at both ends, the distinctive leaves of this species are 2 to 5" long and 1/4 to 1" wide, placing them among the narrowest of the oaks. The narrow lanceolate leaves resemble those of a willow Salix species, but differ by having a slightly undulate and entire margin. Presence of a single bristly tip at the apex places this species in the red-black oak group. The upper leaf surface is glossy and medium-dark green while the underside is a pale green with an irregular band of loose pubescence along the midvein and some scattered elsewhere. |
