Small acorns, 1/2" long, bear a dark red-brown cap that covers 1/4 of the brown and blackish striated broad ovate nut. Since this is a member of the red-black oak group, the acorns mature in 2 years and small first-year acorns of just under 1/8" length can be found on stems in the winter.
