Willow oakCulture: The Willow oak is a relatively common tree in warmer climates where it is winter hardy. At the University of Illinois, only selected seed sources are winter hardy. This species has a relatively fibrous root system and thus transplants fairly easily. This species has been reported to survive in difficult sites including dry soil conditions or urban environments. The author has observed nice plantings in the exposed conditions of urban streets in Salt Lake City, Utah. This species has few serious insect or disease problems. Cold hardiness is its main limiting factor in the North. Usage: The willow oak makes an excellent shade tree and is also used in street tree plantings and in other large areas. The descending lower branching pattern unfortunately can require heavy pruning for high traffic clearance. |
