Rhododendron schlippenbachii
Royal azalea

A distinctive feature of this species, the leaves are obovate and clustered at the ends of branches appearing whorled with approximately 5 leaves at the end of each branch. They are 2 1/2 - 5" long with a cuneate base and rounded to slightly emarginate apex that is also mucronate pointed. The margins are entire and very slightly undulate. The leaves are minimally pubescent only when young and glabrous at maturity.
