| Rosa xanthina f. hugonis Father Hugo roseCulture: Like most roses, this species performs best in a sunny location with moist well-drained soils that are acidic to neutral. Plants may need occasional renewal pruning to keep the habit at its best. This species is considered to be quite trouble-free, although some of the usual minor pests of roses may need occasional attention. Usage: With its showy flowers and attractive fine-textured foliage, this species makes an excellent specimen and also has a place in a shrub border. Because of its prickly stems, it could also be used as a barrier or large un-sheared hedge. The Father Hugo Rose is named for Father Hugh Scallan, a plant collector that originally sent seeds from China to Kew Gardens. |
